It is the third week of our Cancer Awareness Campaign and this week we’ll be sharing with you, the Side Effects of Consuming Soda. We all love soda and its so called refreshing taste. The fact that it is very affordable makes it even more appealing but what we do not know is that soda isn’t as pleasant to our bodies as it appears to be. Some people tend to think that soda is only harmful because it causes weight gain. However, over the years research has shown that soda is a lot more harmful. Sodas are beverages that are loaded with sugar, food chemicals and colorings. Soda pops (the gaseous part of soda) acidifies the body and literally feeds cancer cells. Their sugar content is popular known to raise blood sugar levels in the body.  Hey there, Welcome to another edition of Healthy Edibles Weekly Newsletter. It is the second week of our Cancer Awareness Campaign and this week we’ll be sharing the Health Impacts of Smoked Food. We all love perfectly smoked meat (which is popularly referred to as “suya” or “asun” in this part of the world). We don’t mind sitting down to a wrap of that perfectly smoked “mallam suya” with garri, oats, pap or whatever we love to combine it with. While eating suya, roasted corn, smoked guinea fowl and smoked pepper chicken can be tasty, satisfying and pleasurable, it is not so healthy. Smoked food contains harmful chemicals known as Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Heterocyclic amines (HCAs). When smoking food at high temperatures or with direct heat, the food tends to blacken; those blackened areas contain HCAs.  Hey there, Happy new month to you. Welcome to the first lap of the ember months. It is September which happens to be Pediatric Cancer Awareness month. We at Healthy Edibles will throughout the month of September enlighten you on healthy food choices that can help prevent the risk of cancer. This week, we’ll be giving you a general overview of pediatric cancer and a list of not-so healthy food choices that tend to increase the risk of cancer in anybody.  Pediatric cancer also known as childhood cancer is simply cancer in children ranging from brain cancer, leukemia, neuroblastoma, bone cancer, lymphoma and the likes. Children with cancer are known to have learning disabilities for a while and if not properly managed, it could span the rest of their lives.  While cancer is mostly caused by accumulated damages to genes, there are other factors that could increase the risk of cancer.
